T1(super)Blog57 Take your kids to work day

My day was pretty fun. I didn't get to sleep in though. I learned a lot simply in the morning just going to work! My dad takes a bus to the canada line skytrain and from there goes to the downtown city center station. From there he walks about 3 blocks to his work. The wierd part was that on the ride on the skytrain it was quiet. Eerily quiet. I mean it was dead silent except for 2 people talking in the corner and the sound of the moving train. You'd think people would be on their cell phones, or reading, or sneezing, or laughing, or saying "excuse me", but there was none of that. It was awkward when i started talking because everyone suddenly turned my way......They were like zombies. I think they were zoned out (staring into space) for the whole train ride! And my dad was one of them! He said that in the morning people are too busy to talk because they are thinking too much about what they have to do when they go to work, or wherever else they are going. On the skytrain back it wasn't like that at all....but to think 1 skytrain sections filled with about 50 people was silent. That was a huge thing that i noticed.....but i guess it was nothing to do with work. When i got to my dad's work there was a bit more noise, but not as much as i thought there would be. You could still here the sound of the people walking across the hall. Anyways i was introduced to many people....and then i finished my math homework. In my dad's office there was this whole program where there were about 8 kids and they talked to us about BCTC-my dad's work- and how it works. It was very informative. There are some pictures above as you can see. They are of the sub-station we went to near scotia bank theatre. We had a whole tour of the place. I now know what a tranformer is......If there is extra energy running through the circuits-let's say 60 volts- then the tranformer breaks it down into sizes we need instead of using 60 because we don't use that much. I don't know if volts is the correct term ......There are also circuit breakers that send help send the electricity into the grid. Those circuit breakers are attatched to huge wires where they get all their electricity from, those wires are connected to this huge machine that i forgot the name of. And this is all inderground too! I mean you can't see it, it isn't exactly underground, but its in a building that is pretty obscure. The electrical engineer that was showing us around said that if it was above ground-because the conducters are underground- then instead of using wires we could use metals like copper and iron to conduct the electriciy to places. There was so much more stuff that we did......this guy talked about how BCTC and BC hydro is going to help make the Olympics greener by not using huge, loud noisy, energy bombs-as i call it. Instead they are going to take electricity from our main grid, but they've obviously had to make changes. Hmmm.....I learned a lot, but i didn't learn much about my dads job. He's a financial Annaylist. He's one of the people that take care of the money going to and from the company. He also sits in his desk all day. And i happen to know there is a very convenvient food source in the same building-2 floors worth!- that he visits every morning. On top of that they feed their employees food-mainly sweets- during their meetings. Wow this is one huge blog. Well hope you liked a recap of some of my day.
